Who Said That? (Specialist Round 8)

Only two of the questions in this round (including the supplementaries) can be reliably verified. In the majority of cases, the only correct answer to the question is "Nobody knows".

Of the ten "quotations" in this round, in four cases (questions 1, 2, and 3, and Supplementary 1) it is extremely doubtful whether the person cited ever said what he is supposed to have said. In one further case (question 6) I can find no reliable evidence to confirm that he said it, but I'm prepared to believe that he did.

In the case of question 4, the cited person put something similar into the mouth of a character in a very obscure novel (his first, only published more than 50 years after it was written). To say that he said it is at best misleading.

The quote in question 5 is genuine!

In question 7, the attribution is incorrect (the cited person probably never said it).

Question 8 is a correct attribution, but it's a common misquote.

Supplementary 2 has a reliable attribution!

This round, I'm afraid, is a classic case of lazy question setting. All of the incorrect "quotations" can be found on brainyquote.com, which never seems to give a reliable attribution for any of its "quotations" and simply regurgitates things that it wishes the person in question had said. I have no evidence to suggest that this was the source for these questions (other than their presence on the site), but I would strongly urge all question setters to avoid this website like the plague. Or, if you find something on there that you like, at least try to find a reliable attribution elsewhere. And if you can't find one, don't use it.
